Key Dates and Times

Location: A38 / Thornbury Road junction, Alveston

  • Dates: 2 February 22 February 2026
  • Times: Overnight from 8:00pm to 6:00am

Closure extent:

  • A38 from the junction with Greenhill to just past Berkeley Vale Motors
  • From the Berkeley Vale Motors junction down along the B4061 Thornbury Road and part of Alveston Hill

There will be no through access for motor vehicles through the works area during these times.

Diversion Route In and Out of Alveston

During the overnight closures, the councils alternative route in and out of Alveston will be:

  • From the Bristol direction (and vice versa):
    • Fern Hill
    • Lower Tockington Road
    • Upper Tockington Road
    • Haw Lane
    • Alveston Road

Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for their journeys, especially if travelling for work, school or driving commitments in and around Thornbury and Alveston.

Routes the Council Advises Against Using

The council strongly recommends that drivers do not attempt to use the following lanes as cut-throughs to Thornbury or the A38:

  • Mumbleys Lane
  • Sweet Water Lane
  • Washingpool Hill Lane (for access to the A38)

These lanes are narrow, unlit rural roads, unsuitable for large volumes of traffic and untreated in winter, increasing the risk of difficult and unsafe driving conditions. Following the official diversions helps maintain safety and reduces congestion on unsuitable local lanes.

Access for Residents

During the closure times:

  • There will be no through access for general traffic through the works area.
  • Residents will have limited access to their properties.
  • There may be delays while work crews make it safe for vehicles to pass through the site.

Anyone expecting carers, deliveries, taxis, or visitors should make them aware of the overnight restrictions so they can plan their driving routes accordingly.

Noise and Working Conditions

To complete the improvements, works will take place across the full carriageway overnight.

  • Noise and vibration are expected while machinery is in use.
  • Materials need time to set in the early morning, so noisy operations will not be continuous for the full closure period each night.

Possible Changes to the Programme

The schedule may be affected by:

  • Severe weather
  • Utility or underground issues
  • Supply or material delays

If changes are required, the council will issue updates on its website and the StreetCare Facebook page. Drivers are encouraged to check the latest information before travelling, particularly in poor weather conditions.

About the Scheme

This work forms part of a wider scheme designed to improve walking and cycling links, enhance public transport along the A38 corridor, and support safer, more sustainable travel for people living, working and driving in and around Alveston and Thornbury.

The project is funded by the Department for Transport through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement and is managed by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
